ORIENTATION STUDY OF A GRAPHITE REACTOR WITH ANNULAR FUEL ELEMENTS (in French)

Journal Article · · Bull. Inform. Sci. Tech. (Paris)
OSTI ID:4123156
With the EDF 3 type fuel element, made up of a uranium tube cooled extemally only, it is not possible to take full advantage of the possibilities offered by the integrated'' system, i.e. a graphite reactor having all the primary circuits inside a prestressed concrete vessel. The use of and annular'' fuel element, however, made up of a uranium tube cooled both externally and internally makes it possible to increase the CO/sub 2/ cooling gas pressure and to increase considerably the performance, in particular the specific power. The methods used for defining a 500 Mw(e) reactor equipped with annular elements are outlined. Compared to EDF 3 the power per unit volume is increased from 1.1 Mw(t)/m/sup 3/ to 2 Mw(t)/m/sup 3/, the specific electric power from 1.1 Mw(e)/t to 1.9 Mw(e)/t, and the number of channels decreases from 2,700 to 850.
