CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LPTR FAST NEUTRON IRRADIATION FACILITY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4123096
The fast neutron irradiation facility put into operation at the Livermore Pool Type Reactor was designed to irradiate samples in a neutron flux having an energy distribution approximating a U/sup 235/ fission spectrum. Two uranium-aluminum alloy plates convert the thermal neutrons (from a graphite thermal column) to fission energy neutrons, yielding a flux between 10/sup 10/ and 10/sup 11/ n/cm/sup 2/-sec in the sample location. The air-cooled plates produce 900 w of power with the LPTR at a nominal power level of 2 Mw. (auth)
