Evaporation, resin concentration, and coprecipitation techniques for the processing of highly active liquid wastes give rise to inorganic sludges with a high water concentration. The preliminary studies undertaken on the bitumen coating of the radioactive sludges from the effluent treatment plant at Marcoule are reviewed. The properties of bitumen and of the radioactive sludge are first described. The principle of the bitumen coating of sludge is discussed. A one- stage and a two-stage process for the coating and the quality of the coating resulting from each process are described. The activity of the liquid wastes and the atmospheric contamination resulting from the bitumen coating are determined for both processes. The problems of bitumen coating are discussed. (J.S.R.)
