THE PHARMACEUTICAL AND MEDICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF HUMAN BODY RADIOACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS

Journal Article · · Bull. Parenteral Drug Assoc.
OSTI ID:4122345
The detection and analysis, especially of K/sup 40/ and Cs/sup 137/, by human wholebody scintillation counting are discussed. Average levels of radioactivity, which result from the decay of the major radionuclides in man, are tabulated. The basic principles involved in liquid scintillation counting are outlined. The liquid scintillation counter (SINCO-P) is described and its advantages are listed. In comparison with crystal scintillation counters, the resolution of gamma energies is not as discrete; however, activity of different nuclides can be satisfactorily resolved if their gamma energies are sufficiently different, The counter consists of two 2- pi detector tanks of welded construction fitted together to form a 20-in. dia. center well 72 in. long. At the sides of the two tanks are twelve 16-in. photomultiplier tubes. Each tank is filled with 90 gal of a liquid scintillation solution. The complete detector is housed inside a 92-in. deep, 88in. wide, and 84-in. high steel room that provides a shield of 6 in. of mild steel in all directions, Applications of the counter are cited. K/sup 40/ measurements of lean body weight of football players are compared with measurements on students not involved in unusual physical activity. On the average, the football players measured 12 to 14% higher lean body weight, indicating the potential of determining physical fitness states by K/sup 40/ measurements. (BBB)
