The apparatus described is intended for use with a reactor using sheathed fuel elements, a closed CO/sub 2/ cooling circuit, and a valve for relieving pressure in the coolant circuit. A duct is provided from the valve to an absorption tower through which liquid NaOH is circulated. The coolant gas is removed in the form of a sodium carbonate sludge. A gas holder may be connected in closed circuit with the absorber. (A.G.W.)
