Beneficial Uses Program. Progress report, period ending September 30, 1975

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4120921
Progress is reported on a program that involves a number of activities at Sandia Laboratories to develop the necessary technology for cost-beneficial use of a maximum amount of radioactive waste. Major activity is currently concentrated in the Waste Resources Utilization Program which has as its objective the use of cesium-134/137 as a gamma radiation source, coupled with modest heating, to treat sewage sludge to rid it of pathogenic organisms so that it may be safely used as a fertilizer or a feed supplement for ruminant animals. Other activities included in the Beneficial Uses Program are efforts to: (1) develop a cost-effective radioisotope separation technology based on column separation techniques associated with the Sandia Solidification Process and (2) develop a broader technology for beneficial applications of the separated isotopes.
