Fog-cooling. wherein the reactor coolant is a dispersion of water droplets in stead, is under development for pos sible application to light-water- moderated reactors. The advartages of a steam-water mixture are lower coolant density, reduced thermal stresses, high heat-transfer coefficients, direct cycling, negative pressure coefficient of reactivity, and high specific power. The problems encountered are: the fog must be produced at the inlet of each reactor channel; steam-recirculation pumps are required; coolant velocity may pose an erosion problem; and coolant stability depends on its quality and flow rate. Fogcooling is applicable to various types of reactors: watermoderated (light and heavy water), graphite-moderated, and possibly fast reactors. The projected work is outlined according to the tasks of Certro Informazione Studi Esperienze, Ansaldo Company, and Nuclear Development Corp. of America. The CAN-1 design parameters are tabulated.
