Measurements of the average ionization energy, w, of alpha particles with the help of a proportional counter are described. A Po/sup 210/ preparation situated on the point of a platinum wire, which could be displaced inside a lead to the counter tube, so that the absorbed energy ( alpha rest energy) in the counter volume could be changed stepwise. Methane and ethylene served as measuring gases, which flowed through the counter volume after purification. Inside the available alpha -rest-energy intervals of 5.3 to 1.5 Mev for methane and 5.3 to 0.6 Mev for ethylene, no variations of the w value with energy could be found. As average values W/sub CH/sub 4/ = (28.7 plus or minus 0.15) ev/ion pair and W/sub C/sub 2//sub H//sub 4/ = (27.4 plus or minus 0.15) e v/ion pair were obtained. (tr-auth)
