The weight ratios of oxygen to silicon, per cents of oxygen, and per cents of silicon in Plainview, Karoonda, Atlanta, Murray, Orgneil, Manbhoom, Vigarano, Richardton, and Mokoia meteorites and in G-1 and W-1 rocks were determined nondestructively by activation with 14-Mev neutrons. These quantities were obtained by simultaneously counting the gamma activities of nitrogen-16 and aluminum-28 produced in the O/sup 16/(n,p)N/sup 16/ and Si/sup 28/(n,p)Al/sup 28 reactions, respectively, using quartz as the reference. Two counting methods were used: one following the nitrogen-16 snd aluminum-28 activities by two singlechannel analyzers; the other recording the gamma -energy spectra of the irradiated samples by a 200-channel analyzer. The results are compared with those obtained by other methods. The sensitivities of the present method are 1000 ppm for oxygen and 250 ppm for silicon, each with an estimated error of 5%. (auth)
