NEUTRON-CAPTURE GAMMA RAYS OF NICKEL. Sect. II of RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF NUCLEAR SPECTROSCOPY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4119558
A sample of nickel oxide powder and three metallic samples isotopically enriched in Ni/sup 58/, Ni/sup 60/, and Ni/sup 62/, respectively, were placed in a reactor neutron beam and the emitted capture gamma rays were studied by means of a single scintillation crystal and a three-crystal scintillation spectrometer. Most of the natural-nickel gamma rays were assigned to at least one of the three isotopes studied. The high-energy gamma rays of Ni/sup 59/ and Ni/sup 61/ agree, within experimental errors, with proton-group energies previously measured in Ni/ sup 58/ (d,p)Ni/sup 59/ and Ni/sup 60/(d,p)Ni/sup 61/ experiments. The neutron- binding energies were found to be 8.99, 7.81, and 6.80 Mev for Ni/sup 59/, Ni/sup 61/, and Ni/sup 63/, respectively. (auth)
