PRIMITIVE LEAD FROM IRON METEORITES

Isotepic analyses show that the Odessa iron meteorite, as well as the Toluca iron meteorite, contains the primeval lead that was first discovered in the trollite obtained from the Canyon Diablo and Henbury iron meterites. However, significant variations of isotepic ratios occur within all these meteorites. Lead from samples of the Odessa meteorite has unusually large amounts of Pb/sup 206/ that increase with the bismuth content. Nuclear synthesis may account for the differences in isotopic composition found in diiferent samples of this meteorite. There is no suggestion of transitions towards the radiogenic type of lead observed in some iron meteorites (including Toluca). Within ths limits of error, the sampls of the Pinon nickel-rich ataxite conhained no detectable lead. This result corroborates independent measurements that indicate that Ihis type of iron msteorite contains at the most only a few hundredths' ppm of lead. Octahedrites, on the other hand, may contain as much as 0.25 ppm of lead. (auth)
