The separation of tungsten-184

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4118537· OSTI ID:4118537
The advantages of tungsten enriched in W184 for reduced neutron absorption cross sections in rocket reactors are outlined. Preliminary estimates were made of the costs of separating tungsten isotopes to produce a tungsten material with an absorption cross section in the range of 3 to 7 barns. The estimates were made for both the case of a new gaseous diffusion plant designed for tungsten isotope separation, and for the case of utilization of existing gaseous diffusion equipment. The results indicate a cost varying from $1000 to $10000 per pound, depending on the amount and concentration desired.
