RADIOXIDATION OF Fe$sup 2+$ IONS IN KBr SOLUTIONS (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Zhur. Fiz. Khim.
OSTI ID:4117536
The addition of KBr to FeSO/sub 4/ solution in 0.8N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ lowers the yield of radio-oxidation of ferrous iron by gamma rays of a Co/sup 60/ source from 15.6 to 12.3 in the presence of air and from 8.10 to 4.4 in a degassed solution. The diminished yield is caused by competing reactions of OH radicals with Br/sup -/ and Fe/sup 2+/ ions, and of H atoms with Br and Fe/sup 3+/ . The dependence of the yield of Fe/sup 2+/ oxidation upon the concentration ratio (Fe/sup 2+/): (Br/sup -/) permitted the ratio of the rate constants of reaction between OH radicals and Fe/sup 2+/ and Br/sup -/ to be determined. This was found to equal 90. (auth)
