Approximately 2100 metric tonnes of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) are presently stored underwater in two fuel storage basins. These basins are located in the 100 Area at the Hanford Site, located near Richland, Washington. The SNF cladding has been breached in a large percentage of the fuel and the uranium metal is reacting with the basin water. The basin water, particularly in the 100 K East Area, has significant quantities of nuclear isotopes and radioactive fuel corrosion particles that have escaped from the fuel elements. To permit cleanup of the 100 K Basins and condition the SNF for storage, the SNF will be transported from the 100 K Area to a new facility in the 200 East Area. A SNF Path Forward Project has been established to develop engineered methods to expedite the removal process.
