The mission and programs of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) are undergoing penetrating reassessment, precipitated by many of the same downsizing challenges that face much of the nuclear industry today. The ANS, in keeping with its efforts to prepare for the 21st century, is planning staffing, departmental, and governance changes to meet the changing conditions. On the one hand, our membership tells us that public outreach is a priority. On the other hand, the shrinking national membership and decreased revenue have demanded severe belt-tightening in the Public Outreach Department, as it has throughout the Society`s operations. This paper describes public outreach on a limited budget.
