X-ray production in heavy ion-atom collisions: 4fsigma electron promotion

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4116465
A systematic study is made of x-ray production in ion-atom collisions for electron promotion by 4f sigma molecular orbitals. L x-ray production cross sections are presented for P$sup +$, S$sup +$, Cl$sup +$, Ar$sup +$ and K$sup +$ projectiles incident on Ar gas targets for projectile energies between 15 and 200 keV. In addition, high resolution L x-ray spectral measurements for Ar$sup +$$Yields$ Ar collisions are presented. Average values of the fluorescence yield and total L-shell ionization cross sections are determined. A dramatic Z dependence observed in the x-ray production cross section is attributed to changes in fluorescence yield. New theoretical calculations of argon L fluorescence yield are found to be in reasonable agreement with the experiment for the Ar$sup +$ $Yields$ Ar case. (auth)
