Recent studies have demonstrated inherent numerical difficulties in some multidimensional S{sub N} algorithms when applied to shielding problems, i.e., spatial oscillations in calculated flux distribution, which remained in spite of mesh refinement. Further, it has been shown that these difficulties are caused by the differencing schemes. This paper describes a new directional {Theta}-weighted (DTW) differencing scheme that has been developed to alleviate these difficulties and presents corresponding improvements in S{sub N} solutions obtained for simple test problems using this scheme. A companion paper examines the application of this new scheme to a complex actual application, pressure vessel fluence calculation.
