Cathodoluminescence of a number of alkali halide crystals (KCl, KBr, KI, RbI, CsI) and Ca/sub 3/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 2/ activated with mercury-like ions Ga/sup +/, Ge/sup 2+/, In/sup +/, Sn/sup 2+/, and Tl/sup +/, a s well as of unactivated host crystals was studied. The mercurylike luminescence centers in the phosphors can easily be excited with an electron beam. The experimental results clearly show the appearance of activator emission in cathodoluminescence of the phosphors. The spectrum of the emission is very close to (if not identical with) the fluorescence spectrum; the emission under electron excr.tation corresponds to / sup 3/P/sub 1/ yields /sup 1/S/sub o/ transitions in Ga/sup +/, Ge/sup 2+/ In/ sup +/-, Sn/sup 2+/-, and Tl/sup +/-centers. Dependence of cathodoluminescence spectra on the activator concentration in the surface layer of KI-- Tl was examined. Possible mechanisms of cathodoluminescence of the phosphors are considered.
