On April 7, 1977, President Jimmy Carter announced that the United States would defer indefinitely the reprocessing of spent commercial nuclear fuel: He stated that this policy was designed to set an example to the rest of the nations of the world to turn away from technologies that could lead to further nuclear weapons proliferation. This paper examines the above policy, it`s origins, rationale, and it`s impacts over the years.
