Title: BREMSSTRAHLUNG CROSS SECTIONS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE PLASMA FREQUENCY

The spontaneous emission probability due to the bremsstrahlung mechanism for photons whose frequencies are not much higher than the plasma frequency is computed on the basis of classical radiation theory. The particle orbits are calculated using, for the electron-ion interaction potential, a Coulomb form that is cut off at the Debye distance. It is shown that for all practical purposes, shielding corrections can be neglected in computing the Fourier components of the acceleration, but must be applied for frequencies in the neighborhood of the plasma frequency, when the spectrum is averaged over collision parameters. If the respective assumptions on the underlying physical conditions are matched, results are identical with the results derived by Dawson and Oberman, and by Chang on the basis of kinetic theory.
