SOLUBILITY OF ZINC SULFIDE IN MOLTEN HALIDE SALTS

The solubility of ZnS in molten ZnCl/sub 2/ was determined. Results are also tabulated for the solubility of ZnS in molten NaCl, KCl, ZnBr/sub 2/, ZnI/ sub 2/, and mixtures of ZnCl/sub 2/ with KCl and NaCl, with two values in ZnCl/ sub 2/ at 580 and 730 deg C for comparison. The solubility of ZnS decreases as the nature of the solvent progresses from a more ionic to a more covalent one. In the strongly ionic solvents, NaCl and KCl, the solubility is considerably smaller than in ZnCl/sub 2/. These results suggested that the solubility of ZnS might be enhanced in solvents having a bonding type intermediate between those of alkali halides and ZnCl/sub 2/. (B.O.G.)
