OSTI ID:4114565
In the German Federal Republic research on peaceful applications of nuclear energy began in 1955. There are 7 research centers: Karlsruhe, Julich, Munich-Garching (Institute of Plasma Physics), Hamburg-Geesthacht, Hamburg (German electron synchrotron), Berlin (Hahn/Meitner Institute), and Munich- Neuiherberg (radiation protection). For an assessment of German conditions the following factors were considered: late starting, absence of military atomic program, adequate supply of organic fuels, federal structure of the state, and economic system. Technical an economic aspects were considered. The influence of nuclear technology on the fuel and power and the building industries is discussed. (auth)
