THE AMMONOLYSIS OF ZIRCONIUM(IV) CHLORIDE

Tensimetric studies made by Fowles and Pollard showed that one mole of NH/sub 4/Cl was formed in the reaction of ZrCl/sub 4/ with ammonia at -63 and -36 gas-cooled C. Although these experiments suggested the formation of ZrCl/sub 3/(NH/sub 2/) - XNH/sub 3/, this compound was not isolated. Removal of NH/sub 4/ Cl from the products of the ammonalysis of ZrCl/sub 4/ did not effect a greater replacement of chlorine atoms, and the ammonobasic zirconium(IV) chloride predicted in tensimetric experiments was isolated in almost quantitative yield.
