The method described comprises the conversion of magnesium with thorium tetrahalide in the presence of a mixture of molten chlorides. Thorium tetrachloride is produced by chlorinating suspended thorium oxide in a melt of chlorides of alkaline and/or chlorides of alkaline earth. An amount of magnesium is added to the resulting mixture of salts that is essentially higher than the amount necessary for the reduction of the thorium tetrachloride to thorium. (Gmelin Inst)
