THE DEVELOPMENT OF ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS FOR PRESSURE TUBES IN WATER-COOLED POWER REACTORS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4113458
The history of pressure tube development is sketched and the developnrent of zirconium alloys for use as pressure tube material is reviewed. It is indicated that the Zircaloys have reached the limit of their capabilities in this application and the investigations being carried out to develop stronger zirconium alloys are described. A hot stress tube operating at design stress of 25000 psi at 300 deg C appeared feasible. It was concluded that as coolant temperatures increase above 350 deg C, it will be necessary to adopt a cold stress tube design. (M.C.G.)
