The problems that arise when cooling towers are used for large nuclear power plants are analyzed under technical and economic aspects. Only known and proven cooling tower designs have been considered. It has been shown that for a PWR power plant of about 900 MW(e) with dry cooling towers, the cost of the electric energy produced is of the order of 4% above that of a similar plant with wet cooling towers.
