Title: ISOTOPIC SEPARATIONS. Progress Report, July-September 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4112825

Cadmium isotopes were separated in the 255 deg separator to provide inventory samples and to provide data for evaluating the inhomogeneous field system. It was found that by shaping the magnetic field to eliminate higher radial angular aberrations from the magnetic lens, a significant improvement in isotopic purities was achieved. Reliable evaluation of a 180 deg sector instrument with 0.5 magnetic field inhomogeneity was achieved. Study of the magnetic field system revealed that the source can be inclined at an angle with respect to the magnetic face to compensate for fringing magnetic field effects. An improved feed system to control vapor flow to the arc during electromagnetic separations of mercury is reported. A method of determining the impinging material concentration during preparation of gaseous target elements for ion bombardment was developed. In calutron system studies, factors which control the beam focal point were examined. Conclusions concerning these factors are discussed, along with findings in ion beam spectrographic analyses and findings concerning isotopic contamination causes. The use of SiS as a charge feed permitted the simultaneous collection of Si/sup +/ and S/sup +/ beams. Information concerning charge preparation is included along with data on current isotope separations. Data and information concerning Pu separations are included along with data on purification of depleted U /sup 238/. Developmental work related to thermal diffusion of Ne/sup 21/, Ar/sup 38/, C/sup 13/, Kr/sup 86/, and Xe/sup 124/ is reported. (J.R.D.) Data are presented on the production of radioisotopes in the last two years at Vinca, Yugoslavia, and the trends of further development of the production are indicated. The methods, techniques, and problems involved in the produc tion are described. Among the materials produced are S/sup 35/, P/sup 32/, I/sup 131/, Au/sup 198/, Cr/sup 51/, Zn/sup 65/ , Na/sup 24/, K/sup 42 /, and Fe/sup 59/. (D.L.C.)
