THE HOT EXTRUSION OF UO$sub 2$ FUEL ELEMENTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4112451
A hot extrusion technique for stainless steel-clad UO/sub 2/ fuel elements was developed that utilizes the fact that uranium dioxide can be hot extruded in a manner amalogous to metals. The process, based on the multitemperature coextrusion technique previously used for metallic nuclear fuel elements, involves the coextrusion of UO/sub 2/ at 1875 deg C within the cladding at 760 deg C. The principles employed, the process development, and a product description are discussed. (auth)
