RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE SAFE HANDLING OF ZIRCONIUM METAL AND ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS
This report amplifies recommendations contained in R.S.P.P. No. 20 on the safe handling of zirconium metal and zirconium alloys. Following a summary of the physical, chemical, and toxic properties of zirconium, the design features necessary to ensure an adequate safety standard in thc construction and installation of plant in process areas, laboratories, and stores are given. Where appropriate, statutory and non-statutory regulations are quoted and used as a framework for specifying operational safety requirements for both normal and accident conditions. The special conditions applicable to the storage and disposal of unirradiated and irradiated zirconium are given in respect of the several forms of waste likely to be met with and the report concludes with recommendations on transport and containers.
