The chemical analytic properties of Am in its various valence states are studied, including the hydroxide, fluoride, phosphate, and oxalate. The possibility of extraction of acid solutions by organic solvents is reviewed, as regards Am(III) and Am(V). The difficulty of separating Am from its principal impurities (Pu and rare earths) is noted. The principal methods for determining Am, viz. absorption spectrometry of the tetra-, penta-, and hexavalent states and radiometry of Am/sup 241/, are reviewed. (T.F.H.)
