The results of a study of zirconium dioxide-base materials in the form of solid solutions with CeO2, Y2O3, and La2O3 in comparison with the properties of the previously studied solid solution ZrO2 -- CaO are presented. Pressed samples in the form of pellets were used for chemical and x-ray diffraction studies and rectangular prisms were used for dilatometric investigation. Dielectric loss factor and permeability were determined on samples sintered at 1400-1750° C in a kerosene-fired furnace. Phase composition was based on selective dissolving of the reaction products in boiling hydrochloric acid. X-ray diffraction patterns of 21 samples of various compositions, which were subjected to various sintering temperatures are shown. Graphs are used to show variation of linear dimensions of 17 samples during heating. Molar compositions of the initial mixtures, interplanar spacings of ZrO2-- CeO2 solid solutions, and ceramic properties (moisture absorption, specific volume, porosity, compressive strength) of ZrO2 with other oxides at various roasting temperatures are tabulated, along with elastic properties (shear modulus, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio), electrical and physical properties (porosity, dielectric loss factor and permeability, Mohs hardness, coefficient of thermal expansion from 0° to 1200°C) and the results of chemical phase analysis. The results are discussed in light of production of new, highly refractory materials from solid solutions of ZrO2 with other oxide components. Special advantages of certain oxide pairs, as well as limitations of cerium-containing compounds as refractory materials, in view of the possibility of reducing CeO2 to Ce2O3, are pointed out.
