SOME ZIRCONIUM COMPOUNDS AND REGIONS OF THEIR APPLICATION
The properties and uses of zirconium compounds, principally zirconium dioxide (ZrO/sub 2/) and zircon (ZrSiO/sub 4/), are reviewed. The natural occurrence of zircon is discussed. Information is given on the industrial production of pure ZrO/sub 2/, characteristic impurities, crystalline modifications (monoclinic and tetragonal (pseudocubic)), lattice parameters, polymorphic transformations, and the action of various additives on the stabilization of the pseudocubic modification of ZrO/sub 2/. Data are presented on the hardness, specific gravity, melting point, vapor pressure, strength, modulus of elasticity, and specific heat of sintered ZrO/sub 2/. The characteristics of stabilized ZrO/sub 2/ (density, porosity, coefficient of heat conduction, coefficient of linear thermal expansion), are discussed and tabulated. Data aie given on the electrical properties of ZrO/sub 2/ and its behavior under the action of radiation. The chemical properties are discussed, and indications of possible and already developed areas of technological application are given. The phase diagram of the ZrO/sub 2/- SiO/sub 2/ system, which is the physicochemical base of zirconium refractory materials, is presented and discussed. A comparatively new and significant region of the use of zircon, for the application of highly refractory, heat-stable and electrically nonconducting coatings on certain metallic parts for protection from corrosion and erosion under rigorous service conditions, is indicated.
