A seal for the vertical rotary shafts of centrifugal pumps is designed so that the pump can be used for long periods, e.g., in the presence of radioactivity, without maintenance other than oiling the motor or shaft. The seal has one side exposed to the atmosphere and the other to the pump intake and means for feeding lubricant to the side toward the atmosphere and for preventing suction of the lubricant to the other side in the case of seal leakage.
