TENSILE PROPERTIES OF ZIRCALOY WITH ORIENTED HYDRIDES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4110075
Room temperature tensile tests were conducted to determine the effect of hydrogen content and hydride orientation on the tensile properties of Zircaloy-4 tubing. It was found that hydride platelets oriented nearly perpendicular to the deforming tensile stress caused large reductions in strength and ductility, whereas the platelets oriented nearly parallel to deforming stress had little effect on the tensile properties. All specimens containing more than 50 ppm hydrogen as normal'' (perpendicular) hydrides exhibited no macroscopic ductility, irrespective of the total hydrogen content. (auth)
