KINETIC ISOTOPE EFFECTS IN THE REACTION OF METHYL RADICALS WITH ETHANE, ETHANE-d$sub 6$ AND ETHANE-1, 1, 1-d$sub 3$

Photolyses of acetone-d/sub 6/ in the presence of a mixture of C/sub 2/H/ sub 6/ and C/sub 2/D/sub 6/ and in the presence of CH/sub 3/CD/sub 3/ were carr ied out to measure kinetic isotope effects for the reactions: CD/sub 3/ + C/sub 2/ H/sub 6/ - CD/sub 3/H + C/sub 2/H/sub 5/; CD/sub 3/ + CH/sub 3/CD/sub 3/ - CD< i3>iH + CH/sub 2/CD/sub 3/; CD/sub 3/ + CH/sub 3/CD/sub 3/ - CD/sub 4/ + CH/sub 3/ CD/sub 2/ and CD/sub 3/ + C/sub 2/D/sub 6/ CD/sub 4/ + C/sub 2/D/sub 5/. The conclusion drawn from the results is that the relative rate constants are within experimental error: k/sub 1//k/sub 4/ = exp(1500/RT): k/sub 2//k/sub 3/ = 0.73 exp(1900/RT); k/sub i//k/sub 2/ = 1.95 exp(lOO/RT).
