CESIUM-137 RESEARCH IRRADIATOR. Annual Technical Status Report No. 1 Covering the Period April 1, 1959 to March 31, 1960
A 12.000-curie, high-intensity Cs/sup 137/ research irradiator was designed and installed on the Georgia Tech campus during the period covered by this report. The basic design is a slight modification of the Notre Dame Co/sup 60/ irradiator with Cs/sup 137/ as the active material rather than Co/sup 60/. The center sample hole has a homogenous radiation field through a vertical movement of 4 in., which will permit a homogenons dose to approximately 200 g of any material with a bulk density close to that of water. The dose rate in the center sample hole is 1.4 x 10/sup 6/ rads/hr. The twelve outer holes, although irradiated from one side only, present a fairly homogenous field to a sample over a length of 4 in. The dose rate in the outer holes is 7.5 x 10/sup 5/ rads/hr.
