A refrigerator is designed for operating at and maintaining a temperature lower than can be obtained by evaporation of He/sup 3/ (0.3 deg K). In this refrigerator, a volume of liquid Hea is continuously diluted with liquid He/sup 4/, heat being absorbed from a load to provide the heat of mixing. He/sup 3 is distilled from the mixture to maintain the He/sup 3/ concentration below the equilibrium concentration, and the distilled He/sup 3/ is subsequently recycled for remixing. Several embodiments of the refrigerator are described. (D.L.C.)
