The suggestion that the rise of sigma sub(pp)sup(tot) at ISR is due to the production of nucleon-antinucleon pairs is reviewed. Various techniques for estimating the N anti-N cross section are discussed. The increase in N anti-N production is not cancelled by a corresponding decrease in the rest of the nondiffractive cross section. Phenomenological consequences of the conjecture are provided. The phenomenon of bare Pomeron renormalization is clarified. (FR)
