Pion--nucleon off-shell t-matrix in pion nucleus interactions

The pion-nucleon half-off-shell t-matrix describes the pion-nucleon wave function at short distances. If one is to attempt to use pions to probe the short range nucleon--nucleon correlations in nuclei it is certainly necessary to understand the short range pion-nucleon interaction. Since the strongest multiple scattering occurs when the distance between scatterers is small it is possible that all cross sections are affected. The size of this effect and (to some extent) the degree of agreement with experiment is discussed. 15 figures. (auth)
