ON THE USE OF FORMAL OPERATOR TECHNIQUES IN QUANTUM STATISTICAL MECHANICS

Journal Article · · Physica
An alternative derivation of the linked cluster expansions for the partition function of a grand canonical ensemble is given. It is shown that the cluster coefficients in that expansion are related to connected Bloch diagrams. In a timeindependent approach, the contributions of those diagrams may be expressed in terms of the generalized scattering matrix of Watson. This t matrix for a hard core irteraction was applied in a calculation of the three cluster coefficients of a boson gas of inpenetrable spheres. The results accord with those obtained by the binary collision method. The relation and differences in the various approaches are discussed. (auth)
