NEW RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES OF THE RARE EARTH ELEMENTS

Three new radioisotopes were made by spallation reactions in rare- earth targets: Lu/sup 167/, half life 54 min, Tm/sup 1/ /sup 61/, 32 min, and Tm/ sup 163/, 2.0 hr, all decaying by electron capture. A previously known ytterbium isotope of uncertain mass number was assigned to Yb/sup 164/, with a half life of 85 min. A new radioactive terbium isotope decaying by K electron capture with a half life greater than three years was tentatively assigned to Tb/sup 158/. (auth)
