Radiation absorbers containing rare-earth oxides such as gadolinium, europium, samarium, and dysprosium may be used in future high-temperature reactors. The conditioms for producing ceramic materials in the system rare earth oxide), reactions during firing, and technological properties were studied. A material consisting of 20 mol.% BaO, 50 mol.% Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and 50 mol.% SiO/sub 2/ and fired at 1500 deg C was found to suit best the requirements for a radiation-absorbing material in high-temperature reactors. Further investigations concerned materials containing monazite sand. (auth)
