LIFETIME OF THE FIRST EXCITED STATE OF N$sup 1$$sup 4$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The mean life of the first excited state of N/sup 14/ was measured by nuclear resonant scattering. The N/sup 14/(p,p') reaction with an N/sup 14/ enriched gaseous ammonia target was used as the source of Doppler-broadened gamma radiation. The value of (7.3 plus or minus 1.8) x 10/sup -14/ sec obtained is a factor of two longer than theoretical predictions based on the wave functions used to explain the anomalously slow C/sup 14/ beta decay.
