CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COURSE OF ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS IN THE PRESENCE OF EXPERIMENTAL FRACTURES OF LONG BONES

Operative fracture of long bones was performed on mature dogs or 7-week- old puppies that had been subjected to whole-body x irradiation in a dose of 250 r under aseptic conditions while anesthetized; intramedullary fixation of the bone fragments or immobilization of the limb in a plaster cast was then carried out. The radiation sickness terminated in recovery in all animals. In adult dogs operated on 24 hours after irradiation the eosinophils disappeared from the peripheral blood during the first few days of illness and body temperature dropped to 35-36 deg on the day of the operation, these being poor prognostic signs; the signs did not point to a poor outcome in the operated puppies. The combined affection (radiation sickness and fracture) terminated in death in haif of the mature dogs. No deaths occurred among the puppies and the first signs of a callus formation was detected roentgenologically in them 7-10 days earlier than in the mature animals.
