The chemical action of 200-kv x rays on deoxygenated aqueous solutions of acetic acid and glycolic acid was studied, mainly as a function of pH and of the solute concentration, in order to distinguish the reactions of "selftrapped" electrons ("polarons") from those of hydrogen atoms formed from the polarons by the reaction (H/sub 2/O)/sup -/+ H/sup +/ - H + H/sub 2/O. The hydrogen atoms react by dehydrogenating alpha -positions to the carboxyl groups, giving molecular hydrogen; in the case of glycolic acid, the electron can attach itself to the OH group in the alpha -position according to: (H/sub 2/O)/sup -/ + HO- CH/ sub 2/- CO/sub 2/H - - CH/sub 2/- CO/sub 2/H + OH/sup -/ + H/sub 2/O ; with glycolic or acetic acid (which does not have an electronattracting group in the alpha -position), the polaron can react to some extent with the carboxyl group, which can then split up, leading to the formation of carbonyl radicals; and in acetic acid, CH/sub 3/- CO- is formed, which leads to formation of biacetyl.
