The measurement and surveillance of the levels of radioactivity in the air and in the precipitation afford a prompt and direct evaluation of the fission products from nuclear explosions and indicate the fluctuations in the ambient air. While this information does not by itself permit us a direct appraisal of the biological effects from radioactive fallout, it aids in arriving at the basis to be used to determine when and where these studies must be made more intensively and in the last instance, what steps must be taken for the protection of the community. In this study the results are presented of a year of measurements made of atmospheric radioactivity by the network of stations distributed throughout the country and which at the present time comprises fifteen units working on a schedule. Maximum, minimum and average values are given for total beta activity in picocuries/m/sup 3/ from mixed fission products. A meteorological analysis of the data obtained is presented. As a result of radioactive fallout all other phases of the environment in contact with the atmosphere were contaminated and for this reason a study was made on foodstuffs and on drinking and superficial waters as these are interconnecting links between th environment and man. Values of strontium-90 in milk are presented. (auth)
