Abstract

Activities in a development program for a mass flow system capable of measuring homogeneous flow, slurries, highly corrosive fluids, and multiphase fluids are reported. The first experimental mass flow meter is nearly complete, and the required intensity of the radioactive source for mass measurements is being determined. Design of the vibrating reeds for the sources are completed. Absorption measurements at energies <100 kev indicate that composition effects are present, however, the effect is not considered serious since the system can be calibrated for each particular material. A mass flow measurement technique is described which has the capability of measuring homogeneous flow, slurries, highly corrosive fluids, and multiphase fluids. The device features ruggedness and reliability and has the ability to measure external to the flow. In the proposed system, the fluid is made to pass through a U-shaped tube wherein measurements of the augular momentum and density yield mass flow directly. As the fluid traverses the 180 deg bend, a radial force is generated, which can be measured with a force transducer. Density is determined by measurement of the radiation absorption in the fluid. A mass flow measurement technique was devised which meets many requirements for mass flow measurement systems. In this technique. fluid is made to pass through a pivoted S-shaped tube. which tends to rotate due to the angular momentum of the fluid. A torque motor and torsion spring maintain zero displacement. the restoring force being a measure of the angular momentum, and density is measured by absorption of radiation passing through a window in the S tube. From the measured angular momentum and density, the mass flow can be computed. Two experimental mass gages using this technique have been constructed. (D.L.C.)

THE SYNTHESIS AND EVALUATION OF NEW BASE STOCK FLUIDS FOR GAS TURBINE APPLICATION. Quarterly Progress Report No. 4 Covering Period September 1, 1960 to November 30, 1960

Progress is reported on the synthesis and evaluation of new pyrazine derivatives for lubricant applications. Emphasis was placed on the preparation of new 2-substituted3-methylpyrazines, 2-substituted-3,6-dimethylpyrazines and conversion of these intermediates to further modified fluid derivatives. Some physical properties of these materials are discussed. In particular, efforts in this quarter were concentrated in the area of phenoxypyrazines. Representatives from 2-phenoxy-3-substitutedpyrazine and 2-phenoxy-6-substituted-3-methylpyrazine classes of compounds were prepared by phenylation, alkylation, and aralkylation reactions of the intermediate 2-phenoxy-3methylpyrazines and 2-phenoxy-3,6- dimethylpyrazines. S>A summary is presented of work conducted on an electrostatic stratospheric dust sampler for small particles. The theoretical considerations include particle dynamics, particle charging mechanisms, and a prototype precipitator design. Investigations were carried out on: (1) an experimental evaluation system; (2) flow tests with Millipors filters; (3) aerosol generation; and (4) precipitator efficiency tests. Descriptions are given of mass analyses of the dust samples using colorimetric, conductometric, and fluorescence techniques. Preliminary evaluation tests indicated that the experimental precipitator was capable of providing 90% collection efficiencies at 95,000 ft for small uranine particles. (B.O.G.)

The investigation of the application of radar to the prediction of radioactive rainout resulting from a nuclear detonation was continued. Records of a number of hours' duration were obtained in 6 storms. These included the rainstorm associated with Hurricane Donna on Septemher 12, 1980. Companisons of simultaneous measurements on the two radars indicated that the discrepancy between their relative values is only 2 to 3 db. Computations and measurements are being made to determine the cause of the difference. Data from summertime storms were transcribed to the form of intensity contour maps.
