RECOVERY OF URANIUM, ALUMINUM AND IRON VALUES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4101265
A method is outlined for recovering and separating uranium, aluminum, and iron from ores having relatively large quantities of iron and aluminum as compared with the amount of uranium present. This method, especially applicable to separating uranium from Chattanooga shale, consists of chlorinating the ore at 600 to 1000 ts C to form volatile metal chlorides, condensing at 100 to 300 ts C to remove the sulfur and revaporizing, passing the volatile chlorides into granular Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ at 600 to 1000 ts C to deposit the uranium, passing the remaining chlorides into Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ at 400 to700 ts C to convert the aluminum into Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and oxidizing the remaining iron to form Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The chlorine left over is recycled. The uranium in the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ bed may be recovered by known means. (D.L.C.)
