DEVICE FOR CLOSING THE BOTTOM HOLES OF THE TANK OF A NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4101211
In heavy-water-moderated reactors, the reactor tank is often provided with a plurality of holes serving as passages for the heavy water circulation. According to the position of the fuel elements within the tank it is necessary to close some of these holes with the possibility of reopening them. The closing device comprises a hollow aluminum capsule as a closing plug. Within its cavity, a device is arranged adapted to lock the plug in the hole to be closed and to couple it with the head of handling means controlling the position of the locking device. The locking device preferably consists of a cold drawn corrugated aluminum strip such as to form a compression spring whose ends laterally pass through openings in the capsule and engage in grooves provided in the wall of the hole to be closed. For unlocking, the cylindrical end of the handling means engages with its bevelled edge over the corrugations of the locking spring in order to compress it and to make it retract its ends from the grooves.
