An appraisal of the current technologicai status of U/sub 2/Omoderated reactors that are fueled with thorium is presented; also included is a description of the research and development program that would be required for a demonstration of U/sup 233/ breeding in a D/sub 2/O-moderated prototype power reactor. It is concluded that U. S. development of D/sub 2/O-moderated reactors should be continued so as to realize the following attributes of such reactors: breeding with thorium in a reactor that cam produce economical electric power and greater extension of U. S. uranium reserves than with any conventer-breeder combination proposed to date. (auth)
